Famous World Cup Matches: Ghana vs. Uruguay, 2010.
As Ghana discovered the hard way at the 2010 World Cup, not all fairy stories have a happy ending. This version of the games was held in South Africa at the World Cup Matches, and only one African country qualified for the knockout round, which meant that the whole continent would be pulling for Ghana.
The Black Stars were fielding their golden side, maybe the finest African team ever to compete in a World Cup, with Asamoah Gyan leading the charge. In the round of sixteen, they defeated the United States 2 – 1 to go to the quarter-finals against two-time champions Uruguay.
Ghana controlled the game, driving for the game-winning goal but having a certain goal foiled on the line by Luis Suarez’s nefarious handball at the World Cup Matches. However, Gyan, who had been brilliant throughout the tournament, missed the penalty, breaking the hearts of a whole continent.
