Indonesia and FIFA are working together to make the 2023 U-20 World Cup a success
All aspects of the preparation (for the U-20 World Cup) until its implementation must be ensured to run smoothly and professionally in accordance with FIFA standards. Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government and FIFA, the world’s football governing body, have agreed to work together to ensure the success of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in the country in 2023.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday, when Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. “All aspects of the preparation (for the U-20 World Cup) until its implementation must be ensured to run (smoothly), as well as to be handled properly and professionally in accordance with FIFA’s standards,” Jokowi said after their meeting at a press conference.
The statement emphasized that Indonesia retains the right to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023. Several parties had previously expressed concern that the right might be revoked in the aftermath of the Kanjuruhan stampede.

According to the results of the FIFA Council meeting in Shanghai, China, on October 24, 2019, Indonesia was initially designated to host the 2021 U-20 World Cup. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the event had to be postponed for two years. On the same occasion, Infantino echoed Jokowi’s statement about FIFA’s willingness to collaborate with the Indonesian government to ensure the success of the 2023 U-20 World Cup.
The FIFA president stated that following the implementation of the 2022 U-20 World Cup in Qatar, which will be attended by 32 senior national teams from November to December 2022, the U-20 World Cup will be the world’s most prestigious men’s football competition.
